HC orders compensation Rs 10 lakh to student

The Madras High Court today ordered a private medical college to pay compensation Rs 10 lakh to a student who was denied admission even after getting allotment order under government quota.

Disposing an appeal filed by S Kiruthika, who was denied admission at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College near here only because she reached the college on the admission day after 5 pm on September 30 last year,a division bench comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam said “the only purpose of denial was to get the seat reverted to the management quota and to accommodate candidates as per the choice of the college”.

“Such procedure for reverting back Government quota seat under management quota on the same day after 5 pm and taking admission of the candidates under the management quota is highly illegal, arbitrary, malicious and unjustified.
